Market Research – Hiring a Professional

Hiring a Professional

Customized economic research covers a wide array of different categories that yield different types of information. Although you can do a lot of this market research on your own using observation and government publications of statistical data, it may behoove you to use a market research firm rather than spending your time doing the research itself. The only one who can judge where your time is best spent is you. Market Research Firms are another way to obtain customized economic research. This can get very pricey, so know what you want before you seek out a professional research firm. If this critical task falls outside of your area of expertise, you will have to hire a marketing firm to do the research.

Surveys

If you are depending on the information that you get from your market research to make a costly decision, hiring a professional research firm is probably the only way to go. Professional research firms will do things like surveys and focus groups to determine the profitability of your business and the ideas upon which the business is based. If you require specific types of information and have a clearly defined audience, you can undertake a survey which will actually provide useful information. Designing a non-biased survey requires expertise and attention to detail that you may not have, which is where a professional becomes useful. A survey may be too time-consuming to design yourself.

Focus Groups

A focus group involves getting feedback about certain specifics related to your business, such as product preference, from a selected group of individuals that are specifically selected to mirror your target demographic. Candidates for focus groups are chosen using special, controlled interview techniques. Participants are allowed to come up with their own ideas,  provide opinions, and brainstorm together for new ideas. Focus groups are great for generating new concepts, getting feedback, and gaining insight into opinions and attitudes. Focus groups are best handled by professionals because they require specialized interview techniques and hand-picked participants. Professional market research firms will also handle preparing the raw data into a convenient, neat report for you to read.

Using Students

A cheaper alternative to hiring a professional is to hire students to do a survey. Many community colleges and universities have marketing programs where students can be hired at a nominal fee on a confidential consulting basis as part of their college curriculum. Students are cheaper because they lack the longevity and experience of an established market research firm, but they will often do a very reasonable job for a fraction of the price.

Points to Consider

What information are you seeking for your business and what are you trying to gain for your business through market research?

Are you trying to develop advertising approaches or do you need to develop new products? Are you looking for new markets?

What do you think marketing research can give you? What information or insight do you expect the market research to bring?

Who will use this information and how much do you plan to spend?
